Welcoming Woodmill High School To Town Loch

At Waterski and Wakeboard Scotland, we want to support and promote inclusion in all that we do. Over the course of the summer, we have been working with Disability Sport Fife and Woodmill High School to engage a group of young people with learning disabilities who were interested in taking up waterskiing or wakeboarding.

On their first visit to the Town Loch National Training Site, the group came for a look around the centre, to watch some others taking part and to choose which sport they wanted to give a go. During this visit, the group was also able to meet and be inspired by Carter Taylor a former pupil of the school and accomplished waterskier.

Following this visit, the group unanimously chose to try waterskiing and over the next three Wednesday afternoons, they got stuck into learning the basics with the support of the Town Loch team. By the end of the third week, they had all made significant progress with some of the group making the transition from alongside the boat on the boom to skiing behind the boat and crossing the wake. They then rounded off their block of visits with much laughter on a short ringo ride.

We asked one of the participants, Riley, to tell us what he’d enjoyed most about his visits to Town Loch:

“The one thing I really enjoyed was the nice and peaceful environment. It wasn’t too loud, and it wasn’t too crowded.

The workers are pretty excellent, thanks to them i learned how to waterski pretty well in a short time (if it had been one session i would have learned all of that in 3 hours).

The ringo is extremely fun due to the fast speed of the boat, its definitely worth it.”

The feedback from the young people has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to working with Disability Sport Fife and Woodmill High School to ensure we are able to welcome and support more young people next season.

Our thanks go to Fife Council for funding this initial block of activity via their Get into Summer programme.
